NASA/Johnson Space Center and AmeriSciences

Houston, Texas . . . NASA/Johnson Space Center (JSC) has
agreed with AmeriSciences® to participate in a joint venture with
NASA/JSC scientists to develop and test nutritional supplements
intended for astronauts to use during earth-bound conditioning and
in-flight physical maintenance. The Space Act Agreement between
NASA/JSC and AmeriSciences sets the stage for the development of two
products: a complete multivitamin regimen for general astronaut health
and a specialized supplemental vitamin for in-flight nutritional needs.

Out of a need for providing increased nutritional support for long
duration space flight, NASA/JSC has spent the last couple of years
compiling scientific data on the basis of an astronaut-specific
multivitamin formulation, with similarities to the AmeriSciences Men’s
Master-Multi formulation.

The Space Act Agreement sets forth both short-term and long-term
objectives for both parties. These include not only the co-development
of the supplement formulations, but shared responsibilities for
extensive product testing, participation in project reports,
identification and assessment of related technologies, and
participation in demonstrations and other activities of mutual interest.

TOZAL(R) Nutritional Supplement Improves Vision in Common Form of Macular Degeneration

February 8, 2009

HOUSTON, Sept. 10, 2008 /PRNewswire/ —

A landmark study at five university-based research centers found that TOZAL(R), a patented combination of antioxidants and micronutrients, enabled patients with “dry” macular degeneration to improve their vision. Patients in the study’s placebo arm, who received the “AREDS-type” nutritional formulation (the current standard of care), continued to lose their eyesight. Results of the TOZAL study are supported by a major new study, which shows that omega-3 acids cut the risk of developing “wet” macular degeneration.

“Now this is the one nobody really knows about that I think is going
to take the country by storm over the next couple of years. Cupuaçu is
known in the Amazon Rainforest as a ‘pharmacy in a fruit’.
It is similar to the Cacao tree. It has the taste sort of like a cross
between chocolate, passion fruit, and bananas . . . It is really a
phenomenal food . . . Now this stuff, it destroys free radicals and is
so high in antioxidants. This can literally help anything that ails you
– from improving the texture of your skin to cleaning out your GI tract
. . . This is the next great Superfood.”

“Fifteen years ago it was virtually unheard of outside the Amazon, but
now this member of the cocoa family is fast making up for lost time.
Cupuaçu is a smooth, elliptical tangerine-coloured fruit which, for
generations, has been a staple food of rainforest people and animals.

Now it is being “discovered” by the rest of the world. While Amazonians use the fruit’s juice to ease abdominal pains and

help women in labour, it is appearing in the West as an ingredient
in not only medicines, but yogurts, lipsticks, jams, teas, and soaps.”

“The Cupuaçu fruit is about the size of a cantaloupe and is highly
prized for its creamy exotic tasting pulp. Like açaí, Cupuaçu is rich in vitamins, minerals, fats and fatty acids, and is traditionally known for its nutritive, stimulant and tonic properties.”

Oily fish such as swordfish, atlantic salmon, gemfish and spanish mackerel, are rich sources of omega-3 fatty acids.

Omega-3 fatty acids are associated with a range of health benefits,
such as lowering the risk of heart disease and relieving inflammatory
conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and inflammatory bowel disease.

Does eating fish reduce the risk of cancer

Experimental studies and some studies in humans suggest that eating more fish and omega-3 fatty acids may protect against cancer. Overall there is limited but suggestive evidence for associations between increased fish consumption and a reduced risk of breast, rectal and prostate cancer.

How much fish should I eat?

The Cancer Council NSW recommends people:

  • Eat fish (preferably oily) at least two times per week
  • Include some plant foods and oils rich in omega-3 fatty acids in their diet.
